Wet food is popular and cheap although it can stick to your cats teeth
giving gingivitis. Vets recommend dry food.
Dry food is easy to serve, keeps and you can give the amount your cat
requires. It also helps to prevent gingivitis. Make sure that there is plenty
of water to go with your dry food.
A plastic low bowl is easy to clean and doesn't tip over. It can hold water too.
Your cats will need to be transported to the Vets. This can only be done
safely in a cat carrier. I find the cage carrier, roomy, lets the cat have
good visibility and is easy to use.
A plastic carrier is cheaper but smaller for the cat and very difficult to use, especially with an irritable cat.
Flea prevention is important, especially in he summer. The prescription
medicines like Frontline and Stronghold are more effective than the supermarket
brands but more expensive.
Clay based cat litter, is the most common type of cat litter. It comes
in both clumping and none clumping varieties. I prefer clumping as it makes
the cleaning job easier and you know which bits of litter have been used
and which bit have not.
Wood based cat litter is better for the environment. Unfortunately my
cats hate the stuff and refuse to use it.
A litter tray holds cat litter. Some do this simple task better than others. I have a covered cat litter that keeps the litter inside no matter how much excavation the cats do. It also helps with odours.
Cats need regular worming. The worming tablets available from your vet are more effective than the wroming tablets that you can buy in your supermarket, (pictured left)

A collar holds your address tag enabling your cat to be found if it becomes
lost. Always get one that is easy to escape from in case it gets caught
Preferably buy a reflective collar so that the cat can be send by drivers
at night. Also buy one with a bell. This helps to save the local bird population.
Pleasing your local bird watchers and also helps to deter your cat from
bringing in dead animals. It is worth persevering with collars even if your
cat repeatedly loses them. They do get used to them in the end.

Cat nip spray is useful to getting your cats to like a certain area where
you want them to be as opposed to areas where you do not want them to be,
where you can use cat deterrent spray. I sprayed catnip on my scratching
post to encourage the cats to use that rather than the furniture. The spray
also helps with making cats feel comfortable with unfamiliar surrounding,
say during adoption/fostering. |
Flea spray is useful to rid your house of fleas or to prevent them from arriving. It is best to treat the cat first, remember.
Cats groom themselves when they are healthy but brushing cat help and
is indeed essential for long haired cats. Cats may take a time to get used
to the brush but more often than not get to enjoy the attention that the
brush gives them.
Cats like to have a place of themselves. A covered basket is most preferred.
Place it in a spot where the cat has already warmed to, usually in a warm
spot.
Use cat behavior spay if you want your cats to avoid certain objects
that you can not put out of reach, or which you do not want clawed. Jessie
took to biting the lead of my electric iron. This was dowsed with the spray
to deter her.
A cat fork helps separate your cats cutlery from your own for hygiene.
It is also good from scraping out wet cat food easily.
Use a cat grooming glove if you have a cat that likes to give un expectant
bites during stroking. (My cats do not like this product)
Sometimes your cat comes in very dirty with substances you do not want
to be licked clean. Ginger has come in with fence paint and engine oil before
now. Ordinary shampoo may be harmful so I use this Tea Tree Oil shampoo.
Cats like milk but the normal dairy milk contains lactose that that cannot deal with.
Special Cat milk is a nice treat for your cat.
Cat treats make an occasional reward for your cat. However they can make
your cat fat and are not nutritionally balanced as a replacement for their
normal food. |
Young cats and kittens like balls. A simple ping pong ball will keep them amused for hours.
Dental Cat Dry Food.
Chews. These are cat treats that help brush the cat's teeth.
Cat Toothpaste. If you have a compliant cat or cat train a kitten.
Cat Oral Hygiene Gel. You apply this to the mouth and the cat just licks the gel.
This is useful for when you have difficulties brushing your cat's teeth.
Young cats and kittens like bells.
